Recycling Program
Drop-off locations for the City's recycling program are the Goodwill Industries, 5216 Jackson Street, and John Eskew Training Center, 1700 Ashley Avenue. The Goodwill Store accepts recyclables from 9 am to 5 pm Monday - Saturday. The John Eskew Training Center accepts recyclables from 8 am to 4 pm Monday - Friday.

Only newspapers and metal will be accepted. Newspapers include all inserts and colored ads. Metal include aluminum beverage cans and containers, tin food containers and steel food containers. Newspaper and metal items must be placed in separate blue, white, or clear plastic bags.

Christmas Tree Program
The City of Alexandria recycles Christmas trees collected curbside from customers each year in January.

The State of Louisiana encourages communities to recycle Christmas trees through the Department of Natural Resources Christmas Tree Program. The program is designed to protect Louisiana's coastal wetlands against further erosion by using trees as barriers. Christmas trees are transported to Calcasieu Parish for the coastal restoration project. Contact Ann Wilson at 441-6251 for details.

Adopt a Street, Park or Spot Program

The City of Alexandria and Cenla Pride are sponsoring a volunteer litter prevention program involving the City's streets, parks, bus stops and other areas. The program reduces government dollars and manpower being spent in the removal of litter. Organizations and businesses are given the opportunity to physically participate in the upkeep and beautification of these areas.

Mulch Giveaway

A mulch giveaway is scheduled for the second Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 1212 Hudson Blvd. Citizens must have a pick-up truck or trailer as mulch will be loaded with a front end loader. For more information, call 441-6240.

Arbor Day

Arbor Day is celebrated the third Friday in January. the City provides workshops throughout the year on tree planting, composting and other environmental topics. Trees are available to neighborhoods, organizations and businesses for planting on public areas. For more information, contact Ann Wilson at 441-6251.

Hazardous Waste Disposal Day
The City of Alexandria's Hazardous Waste Disposal Day is Saturday, May 17, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Complex, 2021 Industrial Parkway

Items accepted:

Used motor oil, anitfreeze, brake fluid, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, chlorine, home hobby supplies, paints, thinners, corrosive chemicals (lye, muriatic acid), photographic chemicals, floor and furniture polish, drain cleaners, disinfectants, gasoline, spot removers, rust removers and fluorescent light bulbs

DO NOT BRING:
Ammunition, Lab Waste, Commercial Waste, Explosives

Electronic Waste Recycling

The City of Alexandria has included E-waste with the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.  Electronics contain materials that can contaminate water, soil, and harm human and animal health. 

What electronic equipment is accepted at the HHW Collection Day?

Computers, Computer accessories, keyboards, mice, speakers, Telephones, Telephone systems, Uninterrupted power supplies, Security systems, Cell phones, Pagers, Network equipment, Fax machines, Circuit boards, Processors, Monitors, Printers, Toner cartridges, Ink jet cartridges

We do not take:Televisions, Stereos, Copiers, Appliances, Furniture

HOW TO PREPARE MATERIALS:

1. Seal material in its original container.
2. Place material in cardboard box.
3. Wrap glass bottles in a cloth, newspaper or other packaging material to prevent breaking.
4. Place cardboard box either in the trunk of the car or in the bed of a pickup truck

Great American Clean Up


The City of Alexandria and Keep Cenla Beautiful will coordinate citywide cleanups on the first Saturday of April and May. The effort is in conjunction with the Cleanest City Contest. Volunteers are needed to plant flowers, pressure wash public areas, mow, trim, and pickup litter in public areas. For more information or to volunteer, call Ann Wilson at 441-6251

Backyard Composting
To reduce the amount of yard waste sent to our landfill, the City of Alexandria and Keep Cenla Beautiful encourage residents to do backyard composting. Yard and kitchen waste can be turned into rich compost in a few short weeks. Compost bins are available for purchase at the Environmental Services Department, 1212 Hudson Blvd. For more information including the type and cost of the bin, call Ann Wilson at 441-6251.
