Half Fare Policy/Procedures
for the City of Alexandria, LA Atrans:
The City of Alexandria, LA and the municipal
transit system, ATRANS, incorporates the half-fare program
into daily operations according to 49 CFR, Part 609. The half-fare
policy is authorized and mandated by the Federal Transit Administration
(FTA).

ELIGIBILITY
Elderly persons are defined as all person’s 62 years
of age or older.
Persons with disabilities are those who can
use the bus only with physical difficulty. A Medicare card
can be used for special identification in this regard.
Any person possessing a Medicare card (duly
issued pursuant to Title II or XVII of the Social Security
Act) as required by U.S. Code 5307(d)(1 )(D). The City of
Alexandria honors a valid Medicare card as the sole basis
for half-fare.
Fares ($.25) charged to the elderly, disabled,
and Medicare recipients do not exceed one-half the rate of
regular fares, ($.50).
The individual eligible under one of the three
above stated criteria, must apply for the half-fare program
by completing an application and providing proof of age, disability,
or a Medicare card.
If eligible, the individual will be issued
a color coded monthly pass stamped with the half-fare rate,
$.25. After the individual is determined eligible, he/she
will receive a color-coded pass at the end of each month for
the next month’s travels. Annually, ATRANS will contact
the individual to verify the personal data on file including
the mailing address and telephone number.
Each time the individual boards the transit
vehicle, he/she must show the pass to the bus operator and
then deposit the appropriate half-fare.
“Priority seats” are located in
the front section of the bus.
