City Ready for Possible Snow/Ice Event
Alexandria, La., (Jan. 28, 2019) — The City is monitoring and preparing for a potential minor winter weather event. There will be a brief period of time after midnight and before 6 a.m. where the rain will change over to a mix of rain/snow or all snow, according to the National Weather Service.
The NWS has advised that Rapides Parish could see up to one-inch accumulation of snow on mainly elevated surfaces, which may make driving conditions hazardous. A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for our area through Tuesday morning. A light freeze also is expected for the majority of the area on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
“The City has secured sand for roadways and personnel to respond if there is an interruption in services,” said Mayor Jeff Hall. “We won’t know what awaits us Tuesday morning, but we encourage everyone to be cautious. Check before you get on the road.”
The City of Alexandria will delay bus and garbage services until the roadways are safe for travel. All employees are expected to report to work as usual. The State of Louisiana has advised they will monitor bridges and major roadways.
If the forecast changes additional updates will be released through the AlexConnects and Alexandria Utility Systems social media pages and through traditional media.
The City encourages residents to consider taking the following precautions:
- Check on elderly family, friends and neighbors.
- Bring your pets inside.
- Follow instructions on space heaters;
- Do not plug into power strips or use with chewed or frayed cords.
- Do not leave space heaters on in unoccupied rooms.
- Do not use space heaters near curtains, bedding or other flammable materials.
