City Bus Riders Urged to Be Mindful of Safety
Alexandria, La., (Feb. 5, 2019) — The City of Alexandria is urging passengers using city transit services to be cautious around traffic following an accident Monday night. A passenger exiting a city bus near Jackson and Elizabeth streets was struck by oncoming traffic after he walked in front of the bus.
“It is our goal to help our passengers get to their destinations safely,” said Merriell Lawson, director of Public Works for the City of Alexandria. “Unfortunately one of our passengers was injured and that affects each of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and all affected. This is a reminder for us all to be careful and watch for traffic.”
Lawson encourages drivers in traffic near a city bus to watch for pedestrian traffic. “Whether you are a driver or a pedestrian, we all deal with distractions,” Lawson said. “Watch out for others and be ready for the unexpected.”
The City provides the following tips to encourage safety for our passengers and for other drivers on our streets:
GENERAL CITY BUS SAFETY TIPS
While waiting for a city bus:
Don't stand on the street or stand in front of a bus - the driver may not see you or be able to stop in time.
Note that buses stop for customers standing at bus stops, there is no need to wave at the driver.
As a bus approaches, stand away from the street and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop.
Never:
Try to board a moving bus.
Walk in front of or behind a city bus.
Play, skate or ride a bicycle too closely to a city bus or city bus stop.
When you're in a car:
Be careful when passing a stopped city bus - passengers may be exiting and crossing the street.
Always obey all traffic signs, speed limits and signals.
Drive carefully when sharing the road with a city bus; buses can't stop as quickly as you can.
