Alexandria Welcomes Dixie Softball World Series
Alexandria, La. (July 24, 2019) — More than 450 players and coaches will be travelling to Alexandria this weekend as the city hosts softball teams from across the South with four Dixie Softball divisions holding their World Series tournaments at the Johnny Downs Sports Complex.
Activities start Friday night with a welcoming banquet for the 31 participating teams and play begins Saturday with Dixie Softball crowning their national champions in the SweeTees (6 and under), Angels (10 and under), Ponytails (12 and under) and Belles (15 and under) divisions. Alexandria will have a host team in each division competing against state champions from across the South.
The SweeTees will feature the Alexandria host team and state champions from Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and the Louisiana state champion team from Sabine Parish.
The Angels will have the Alexandria host team and state champions from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and the Louisiana state champion team from Ward 10 in Tioga.
The Ponytails will include the Alexandria host team and state champions from Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and the Louisiana state champion from Springhill.
The Belles will showcase the Alexandria host team and state champions from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and the Louisiana state champions from Winnsboro.
“We are so pleased to welcome back the Dixie Softball World Series tournament,” said Alexandria Mayor Jeff Hall. “Alexandria has a long history of hosting Dixie Softball World Series tournaments, including the first-ever Mega World Series last year when Alexandria hosted all nine of their divisions.”
Sports tournaments like the Dixie World Series provide a solid boost to the local economy. Traveling teams typically spend $1,500 per day for hotel rooms, gasoline and meals. The 31-team Dixie World Series is projected to generate close to $200,000 in incremental revenue for local businesses.
“Several Alexandria teams have won Dixie World Series titles in the past, here and on the road,” Hall noted. “I wish all the teams competing this weekend luck, but I will be pulling for our local hosts to keep those trophies in Alexandria.”
In addition to the Alexandria host teams competing this weekend at Johnny Downs, the Alexandria Debs team (19 and under) is the Louisiana state champion and will be competing in the Debs World Series in Hopkins County, Texas, this weekend as well.
