First Case of COVID-19 Reported in Alexandria
Alexandria, La. (March 19, 2020) — The Louisiana Department of Public Health has confirmed the first case of COVID-19 coronavirus in Rapides Parish. In the agency’s 5:30 p.m. update today they reported one confirmed case in Alexandria.
“We expected as testing expanded more positive results would be found,” said Alexandria Mayor Jeffrey W. Hall. “We have been preparing for this and believe we are as ready as we can be. We continue to ask people to remain calm and follow the public health guidance we have been receiving, which emphasizes the need for social distancing, taking steps to minimize face-to-face contact and following stringent hygiene practices, including washing your hands thoroughly. And, if you experience symptoms, including fever and cough, please stay home, call your primary care physician and don’t expose others.”
City of Alexandria officials are working with Pineville Mayor Clarence R. Fields as well as the Rapides Parish Police Jury, local municipal leaders and public health officials.
The Louisiana Department of Health reminds citizens that while older individuals and those with underlying medical conditions are at greater risk, everyone can become exposed to COVID-19 and must be vigilant to protect their health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some of the serious chronic health conditions include heart disease, diabetes and lung disease.
