City Preparing for Possible Severe Weather
Alexandria, La. (March 17, 2021) — The National Weather Service forecast indicates Alexandria could receive severe weather this afternoon. Based on this morning’s forecast, central Louisiana is at a moderate risk, which is a 4 out of 5 risk level based on the National Weather Service scale.
Risks include thunderstorm wind gusts of 60 mph or more, large damaging hail and the possibility of tornadoes.
City of Alexandria officials are monitoring the storm and have crews ready to respond as needed. ATRANS bus service will be suspended at 1 p.m. in anticipation of high winds and operators will be on standby to resume service once the storm passes. To get the status of bus operations, passengers should call 318-441-6087.
Customers are reminded that when storms occur resulting in power outages they may report the outage online through the AlexConnects app. Downed wires, poles, and other equipment should be reported to the Electric Distribution Department at (318) 473-1301 and residents are reminded to avoid downed lines as they may still be energized. If residents observe street flooding or blocked catch basins they should call 318-441-6032. Drivers should never drive into high water.
Residents are reminded they should stay indoors and off the roads if possible during any storm and exercise extreme caution while driving after a storm as crews and equipment may be clearing debris and making repairs along roads throughout the city.
