Animal Shelter Housing Pets for Evacuees
Alexandria, La., (Sept. 3, 2021) — The City of Alexandria Animal Shelter is pitching in to help Hurricane Ida evacuees who had to relocate to facilities that do not allow their pets to stay with them.
“We try to help out whenever we can during disaster evacuations,” said Alexandria Animal Shelter Superintendent Henry Wimbley. “Housing pets for these evacuees, we hope, helps relieve some stress because they know their animals are safe and being taken care of while they take care of all the other necessities.”
The shelter will house evacuated pets free of charge until they can return to their homes, Wimbley said.
“We understand pets are an important part of a family and, just like their owners, they need care and shelter,” said Alexandria Mayor Jeff Hall. “We are fortunate to have the facilities to care for a number of animals, and we are pleased to provide this aid and comfort to these animals during this stressful time.”
Evacuees can bring their pets to the shelter located at 200 Shelter Road in Alexandria between 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays and from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The shelter will be open extended hours as needed in order to accommodate the evacuees.
The Alexandria Animal Shelter has been offering aid to displaced animals since the state contacted shelters after Hurricane Katrina in order to get their cooperation to help pets and their families in future evacuations.
