City Bus Involved In Accident on Elliott Street
Alexandria, La. (Dec. 5, 2019) — A City of Alexandria ATRANS passenger bus was involved in a traffic accident at the intersection of Elliott and Foisy streets Thursday morning. A total of 15 passengers from the bus were taken to local hospitals for treatment as was the driver of the other vehicle involved. Most of the injuries were reported as minor to moderate, but one passenger from the bus had what were described as potentially life-threatening injuries.
The accident involved the city bus and a pickup truck driven by Arkita Jewell, 37, of Alexandria. The ATRANS bus, which was heading south on Elliott Street, ultimately crashed into a wall and a utility pole.
“My immediate concern is for the passengers who were injured and their families, as well as the driver of the bus and the other driver involved,” said Alexandria Mayor Jeffrey W. Hall. “Our prayers are with them for a complete and speedy recovery.”
First responders including Alexandria Police officers, Alexandria firefighters and EMS personnel and Acadian Ambulance came to the aid of the injured. Nine bus passengers as well as the driver of the pickup truck were transported to local hospitals by ambulance. The remaining passengers reporting injuries were taken by bus or private vehicle for treatment.
Alexandria Police is investigating the accident. No official cause has been determined nor have any charges been announced.
APD reminds drivers to use caution whenever they are behind the wheel. For example, things like excessive speed and distracted driving can lead to accidents, often times with fatal consequences. Drivers should always slow down when approaching intersections and be prepared to stop.
