City Urges Caution During Weather Event
Stay inside, listen to weather warnings
Alexandria, La. (April 13, 2019)—The City of Alexandria has prepared for the expected upcoming weather event. Though the National Weather Service is not predicting heavy rains for our city, we may still experience damaging winds and possible tornadoes, according to Alexandria Utility System Director Michael Marcotte.
Citizens are asked to stay indoors if possible, secure loose objects outside the home if safe to do so and bring your pets inside to a safe location.
The National Weather Service is expecting a severe weather event for our area with widespread thunderstorms developing late this morning and continuing through the remainder of the day before clearing the eastern part of the area around midnight. Some of these storms are expected to become severe with tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds possible. Frequent lightning is expected. There is an enhanced risk for severe weather along and south if the I-10 corridor and an even greater moderate risk of severe storms for the rest of our area northward. A wind advisory has also been issued for portions of southwest and central Louisiana from noon until 7 p.m. tonight.
Citizens are encouraged to stay indoors, if possible, during the storms. Please listen for local weather alerts and immediately heed any warnings. Residents living in mobile homes should be especially mindful of high wind or tornado watches and warnings.
During a tornado or strong wind event citizens should:
• Go to a basement, a small interior room or under stairs on the lowest floor of the house.
• If you live in a mobile home get out and look for a stable building.
• If outside find low ground away from trees and cars and lie face down with your arms protecting your head.
The City’s staff and first responders will be on stand-by throughout the event to provide assistance as needed. Residents are encouraged to direct their calls for service to the telephone numbers listed below. Please do not report emergency issues or dangerous situations through social media.
