Tree & Landscape Ordinance
City of Alexandria Tree and Landscape Ordinance
Alexandria has enjoyed robust growth in the past few years and expects this trend to continue. In order to provide for the systematic, aesthetic, and environmentally responsible development of the city, the Council recently passed an ordinance creating the Tree and Landscape Ordinance.
The intent of this ordinance is to promote the health, safety, and general welfare of the citizens; to facilitate the creation of a convenient, attractive, and harmonious community; to conserve natural resources including air and water; to preserve and enhance property values; and to encourage the appropriate use of the land.
Here are a few of the highlights of the new requirements:
- All new development with parking areas except for Cemeteries, Community Homes, Duplexes, Golf Courses, Group Housing, and Single Family Residential must comply with the landscape requirements.
- A Landscape Plan must accompany all building permit applications for sites that are subject to the requirements of the ordinance.
- The Urban Forester must review and approve plans before a Building Permit can be issued.
- The Urban Forester must perform a site observation to determine if the required landscape elements have been installed before a Certificate of Occupancy can be issued.
- Refusal to comply with the landscape requirements will result in the denial of application for or the revocation of the Certificate of Occupancy and a fine of $50.00 per day for each day that required landscaping is not installed.
