Alexandria, La., (April 7, 2019) — The City of Alexandria reports that all drainage pumps are running and the streets are continuing to drain following today’s rain event. “We are carefully monitoring the weather and our streets, especially the Martin Park area,” said Merriell Lawson, director of public works. “The streets are the natural conduit for drainage, so don’t be alarmed when you see water in the streets. Sewer main work will result in detour
Alexandria, La. (April 5, 2019)— Horseshoe Drive will be closed to traffic beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 8, 2019, until 5:30 p.m., Monday, April 15, 2019.
Relocation work on a sewer main is planned for those dates. The utility crossing and road closure will be located immediately southeast of the intersection with Jackson Street Extension.
This schedule is weather dependent. Weather delays could result in a longer closure.
Horseshoe Drive traffic will be detoured via Navaho Trail and Camille Street.

Alexandria, La. (April 4, 2019) — Mayor Jeff Hall announced today that the Alexandria Police Department arrested and charged an officer with second degree battery and malfeasance in office in response to an excessive force complaint. The charges stem from a March 18 incident in which the officer, Devn Cates, arrested a 30-year-old man for possession of ecstasy. When the suspect refused to follow instructions to sit down after being brought to the jail, the officer placed the suspect in a headlock and threw him to the ground. Alexandria, La., (March 15, 2019) — A house fire today resulted in the death of one person, according to Alexandria Fire Chief Larry King. The City of Alexandria Fire Department responded at 3:58 a.m. to 2103 Harris St. AFD fire investigators have determined that the fire started in the bedroom. “This was a tragic event,” said Chief King. “It is important that people remember not to leave candles or cigarettes burning or heaters unattended in their homes. Lee, retiring executive director of Cenla Community Action Committee, Inc., received a 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award during a City of Alexandria Division of Community Services Women’s History Month Luncheon at Alexandria Convention Hall.
